Portland to SF by Rowboat

  • The night before launching. A huge thank you to my friend Joy for helping me pull it all together.
  • Goodbye Portland!
  • Gone fishing!
  • My ‘on Safari in Kenya’ selfie, except I am rowing down the Columbia River. Same same.
  • Heavenly light.
  • The morning light was such a gift.
  • Photo 1 – there is so much beauty in the world.
  • Photo 2
  • Photo 3
  • A tanker up-anchoring gave me a terrible fright. Astoria.
  • Fishing boat pre-dawn.
  • Boats charging at me in the dark.
  • Salmon fishing season on the Columbia River.
  • September 02 at 7AM. Columbia River Bar, best described as rowing a rollercoaster on a conveyor belt.
  • I got spat out of the Columbia River at 8.75 knots!
  • Day 1, sharks!
  • A mere foot away from me!
  • Three of them, cruising around under my boat!
  • Arctic Tern. Scores flying south everyday
  • Moon selfie.
  • Arctic Tern + full moon
  • Selfie.
  • Curious and unafraid.
  • Two seal pups hung out with me all morning.
  • A giant glass lightbulb. Very weird.
  • On sea anchor with dolphin visitors.
  • A sea louse that came up with my sea-anchor
  • Land bird visitor.
  • Pre-sunrise
  • The sunset of gods.
  • Post sunset.
  • Adams-Family selfie taken during the storm.
  • Container ship silhouetted.
  • Some of the roughest weather I have ever encountered.
  • Breaking waves.
  • The joy of closing in on the Golden Gate Bridge.
  • Lighting a flare in celebration of arriving!
  • In a month I ate half of that 20lb rock of Parmesan cheese!
  • 1st woman and 2nd person to “intentionally” row the length of the State of Oregon!

Midnight, 17 June 2020,
Lia Ditton rowed alone under San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge and out into open ocean. Almost three months and 2,499 miles later, Lia made landfall in Hawaii before sunrise.

Over 45,000 viewers – including actress @jennifer.garner – watched Lia’s arrival live on social media, as she became the fastest and youngest woman to row the mid-Pacific Ocean.

Featuring never-seen, breath-taking footage Lia shot onboard, this film about her row will take you on a wondrous, emotional rollercoaster.

Sharks circled her boat. Twice she nearly drowned. 87 Days: Alone Rowing the Pacific is one woman’s epic story of survival; endlessly harrowing, ultimately triumphant.

The real summer in San Francisco is now. The real summer in San Francisco is now.
I met Sean Connery and his wife Micheline in April I met Sean Connery and his wife Micheline in April 2010, at a small and intimate cocktail party in New York (the likes of which I rarely get invited to 🤣). Sean was exactly as I imagined, wily, charismatic, entertaining. On the insistence of the photographer I posed for a photo. On being told I had just rowed the Atlantic, Sean said in his Scottish burr, “I want to feel your muscles.” 💪 As we posed, Sean’s hand crept up my back, hence my expression. Rest in Peace #seanconnery. Thank you for the great memory.
