2018 off to a good start, working with the sports physiologist at Under Armour. HQ Portland, OR.
Pilgrimage North, to visit the Columbia River Heritage Museum and the exhibit about Gerard d'Aboville, the 1st man to row the N Pacific.
The joy of beginning again what I feared had ended. Boat ready to relaunch (Feb 2018)
The mission is on! Mission > Pacific!
Bye-bye YO. Hello RowLiaRow!
Wiki Lia! I made Wikipedia.
Lia in the gold of the Golden Gate.
The sky after the storm.
Chasing the Storm: Photo by Christian Agha. What an experience this was, torrential rain, huge rolling sea and howling winds. So much so, my volunteer towboat turned back.
Oh Chevy. I love driving around in what feels like an armchair, but must you keep teaching me about cars by failing bit by bit?
Puerto Vallarta > SF by 30 knot Nigel Irens-designed cruiser-racer trimaran. This delivery paid for the repair of my car.
Recovered, not rescued by the USCG. Lots of lessons here, mostly on the importance of communication between vessels when interacting at sea.
Plenty of floating in 2018. On and off the water. Best bang for buck recovery? Epsom salt bath /sensory-deprivation tank.
Who knew you could look cool while rowing an ocean! Must be the Ocean Racing sunglasses.
Maersk Island. My goodness you gave me a fright when you diverted course straight for me.
Surprise! Dr Aenor and her sister Gigi commandeered a sea cucumber fisherman and his boat and motored out to see me arrive at the end of my SF > Santa Barbara voyage.
O Mag baby! Double-page feature.
Media Highlight of the Year! Guest on the Theo Von Show. My poor phone was battered with comments, messages and pings for 3 days after the show aired on You Tube 🙂
This was the building my potential sponsor was planning to buy. I would have had the space under the mezzanine to build my new boat. Some things just aren't meant to happen. This was one of them.
All dressed up for my friend Alan's wedding!
Christmas came early to the Ditton household! We were all together in England in October, so we celebrated Christmas in October!
FINALLY. What a thing: Non-stop around the Farallons in 3d 35 mins. So challenging, but finally that week the stars aligned for a plan executed to success.
Post Farallon-record coffee and a croissant, brought to me by my dear friend Cyril who even borrowed a kayak to paddle out because I was too tired to up anchor and row to the dock to meet him!
SF Chronicle Travel Reporter Greg Thomas uses the basement archive as his podcasting studio! After Kim Chambers and Alex Honnold, I was the 3rd guest on the show.
New Boat Design Mocked-Up. We built this in negative space, so I could get a feel for the interior space and check deck ergonomics by rowing the parking lot!
The Paradise Fire. Apocalyptic scenes and smoke that burned the back of my nose. I've never experienced anything like it.
It's ocean vistas like this that make my heart sing.
New Chapter: LA Thank you to Rick Leach for helping me trailer my boat down to Marina del Rey - new rowing stomping ground.
The film of my row down the California Coast in June has been selected for the Four Seasons Film Fest! Bravo Danielle & FindItFilm.
Catalina I'm coming for you! Rounding you is next.
